Not the Best Start to the New Year
Workplace Stress is on the Rise
Across the United Kingdom, workplace stress levels are reaching record highs. According to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the situation is worsening.
Despite widespread education and wellbeing initiatives, nearly 80 percent of the 2,700 union representatives in the TUC’s latest survey said that stress remains a major concern. Many also reported that employers are failing to assess or address risks as part of routine practice.
Stress was listed as a top hazard in almost every sector, including government, healthcare, education, and even the voluntary sector. Excessive workloads were cited as the main driver of this growing problem.
Stress Is Costing the UK Millions
The Health and Safety Executive reported 22 million lost working days due to stress in 2024–25. Cases of work-related stress, depression, and anxiety rose sharply — from 776,000 in 2023 to 964,000 in 2024.
Meanwhile, the Cigna Healthcare International Health Study 2025 revealed that financial pressure is adding to the strain. Of the 11,000 people surveyed across 13 countries, 47 percent of UK participants said rising living costs were their main stressor. A staggering 70 percent said they experienced financial stress weekly. Only one in ten felt financially secure.
Other countries did not report such high levels of financial stress. Some barely mentioned it at all.
Where Are the Stress Management Programmes?
These figures raise serious questions. Why are so few effective stress management programmes in place? And why do so many existing initiatives fall short?
UK workplaces are losing vast sums, not just through absence, but through reduced productivity from stressed employees. Chronic stress leads to burnout, and burned-out employees leave sooner. This creates further costs in recruitment, onboarding, and training.
Imagine how much could be saved if every organisation offered proactive stress management workshops. The goal should not only be recovery but prevention — helping people stay healthy, focused, and engaged before stress takes hold.
Why Stress Should Never Be Ignored
Unchecked stress can quickly become acute and then chronic. Over time, it can develop into burnout or burnout syndrome. By the time it reaches that point, recovery takes much longer. Wouldn’t it make more sense to intervene early?
At its simplest, stress occurs when we feel unable to cope. Sometimes that feeling comes from perception — believing we can’t manage what we usually can. At other times, it’s entirely real — we are genuinely overloaded and expected to handle too much.
